Nursing Philosophy

Vanessa VanDomelen

My philosophy of nursing is to see the nurse, as a person first and as learner.  This requires the responsibility to be present and prepared (Koloroutis, 2014).   Teaching involves a commitment to lifelong learning that embraces the inclusion of service learning by expanding the curriculum into the local community and abroad globally.  Teaching is enhanced by being present first for self, staff, students, the interdisciplinary team, and the clients we care for.  With this committed presence my ability to facilitate a learning environment that promotes caring through relationship based practices fosters a healing environment for learning where fear has no room.   If we teach who we are, we bring our true assets and self to the table concerning teaching, learning and living (Billings & Halstead, 2012).  It is the bounty at the table shared that is the great harvest of knowledge brought forth that a savored education may proclaim itself.  My philosophy of nursing empowers students in their present and lifelong learning endeavors so that the student may improve the human condition whether it be local or globally.
