Project or Paper and Suggested Research Areas

 

 

Students will be introduced to a variety of art and design disciplines which they will select an area of particular interest from the following:

1) Japanese castles, temples and gardens

2) Graphic design/calligraphy and Japanese anime

3) Industrial design

3) Ceramic tile and pottery design

4) Textile design

5) Paper making

6) Japanese painting (traditional or non-traditional)

 

 

Project:

 

Students may choose to create a project that was influenced by their stay in Japan. A statement of intent descibing what the project consists of and the scope of the project must be submitted for approval previous to creating the work. The statement of intent should be between 100-200 words in length. The project will will be due 45 days after returning from Japan. Students are encouraged to consider the concepts from the readings for incorporation in their project. The expectations for the graduate level project will be greater, a more indepth investigation and exploration of your experience should be made evident through the project.  

 

 

Paper:

 

ART 397–Sudents will write an essay comparing and contrasting a particular design work selected from one of the areas above with a similar design work from Western Civilization. The essay paper will be due 45 days after returning from Japan and will be 10-15 pages in length and must be typed in a conventional font, double spaced with one inch margins. Include photos or illustrations to support your text. Your paper must employ correct grammar and spelling (including Japanese words). Students must use their own ideas and it must be presented in your own words. You may use what you learn on the visit to Japan and the text books for sources but I am most interested in your own ideas and observations. The internet is not an acceptable source.

 

ART 597–3 credits: There will be a final research paper due 30 days after returning from Japan that will be based on one of the areas selected from above. The paper must be 7–10 pages in length and must be typed in a conventional font, double spaced with one inch margins. Include photos or illustrations to support your text. Your paper must employ correct grammar and spelling (including Japanese words). Students must use their own ideas and it must be presented in your own words with full credit must be given to the sources for your research following MLA guidelines. Include a Bibliography of your sources and list sources in the text as they appear. Seven to ten sources is a fair number for your paper. The MLA Manual is available at mini-stations in the library. The internet is not an acceptable source. Texts and encyclopedias can be used to get an overview, then reserve books and journal articles for more recent scholarship. ART 597 students will be held to a higher level of academic expectations than the ART 397 students.
