Costing Out Sim 2: Costing out Teaching a Skill

The assignment is to cost out how much an IV training lab would cost.

Operational tasks are many:

Scheduling of the sim specialist, standardized patients, and faculty are required. Plus, getting the scenarios to the students. If written assignments are also given then getting and grading those will need to be considered.

Below are the costs of just the lab and do not include the above mentioned issues.

Supply costs are also numerous:

From "Pocket Nurse"

Hand and arm IV start practice trainer kits

Item Number: 11-81-0140N

Price $461.18 X 5 = $2305.90

Unit Price: $5.37 X 5 = $26.85

IV Catheters

3ml Syringes – box 100 – need half

Item Number: 06-82-200N

Unit Price: $7.89 X .5 = $3.95

Total = $2698.98 for supplies

Standardized patients = 2 hours X 5 SPs X $15/hour = $150

Instructor to write scenario = $400

Instructor for lab = 2 hours X $50/hour = $100

Sim Specialist = 2 hours X $30/hour = $60

Personnel costs = $710

Personnel + Supplies = $3408.98

After that initial group, the $400 for sim scenario creation should be removed, so then $3008.98 for two hours of training of ten students with one instructor.

These prices were from Pocket Nurse on March 16th, 2016

Cost of sim lab operations, hazardous waste removal, durable medical supplies (such as beds, side tables, etc.) were not included in this estimate but would need to be considered.

Other considerations according to "Health Simulation" Top 5 Questions are:

  • Who will be providing the educator for the training?
  • AV equipment wear + tear
  • Manikin equipment wear & tear + warranty costs
  • Medical equipment wear & tear + warranty costs
  • Administrative fees (scheduling, legal contract development, parking, lunch)
  • Facilities maintenance costs (or square footage costs)
  • Facilities operational costs (water, power, etc.)
  • Marketing costs to advertise your program
