Airframe

The airframe was constructed from an 8 inch sonotube.  Sonotubes are used in the construction industry to make concrete pillars.  In order to make our airframe a 12' section of sonotube was purchased and cut into two pieces.  The tube was cut into two pieces to make it easier to apply the fiberglass and to make transport easier.   The paper covering on the sonotube was sanded off and then 2 layers of fiberglass was applied to give the tube enough strength to withstand the forces applied from the thrust of the motor.  Once the fiberglass and resin had cured, the imperfections in the tube were filled with primer and the tube was sanded smooth.  In order to put the features in the tube, a full scale "flattened" tube was printed using a plotter and the features were transferred to the tube.
