Propulsion

The propulsion system consists of the motor to generate thrust, and the thrust plate for distributing that thrust to the rocket airframe.  The motor that will be used for the rockets maiden flight is an Aerotech M1939W.  This motor produces a maximum thrust of 550 pounds with an average thrust of 430 pounds.  It burns for approximately 6 seconds and weighs approximately 20 pounds.  At the end of its 6 second burn, our rocket should be approximately 2000 feet in altitude.  The remaining 8000 feet are in the coasting phase of the rocket flight.  The rocket is able to coast great distances due to the momentum that was imparted to the rocket by the motor.  Momentum is the product of mass and velocity.  The expected maximum velocity of the rocket occurs just after motor burnout at around 1000 ft/s.
